“It was super cool!”

My volunteer program in South Africa was over. First of all, I have to admit that this was a wonderful and rewarding experience and its going be one of the most unforgettable trips of my entire life.

I am a girl from Hong Kong who will start her MBA life in the coming fall in 2015. Before my busy school schedule, I wanted to fill something interesting and meaningful into my resume. Volunteering can not only enrich my community service experience but also provide me a great chance to do some travelling.

At the very beginning, I was surprised by the dormitory style accommodation. Being away from student status for four years took me a little while to get used to this. But you will never regret to share room with those lovely volunteers. We are all from different countries. I am the only Asian in our entire house. However, I didn’t find any difficulties in communicating and having fun with the others. We did volunteer jobs together in the morning, and got something fun to do in the afternoons and weekends. I am a travelling girl but this time was my very first time to spend my whole holiday with strangers and foreigners. It was super cool, and you will never know what’s going happen each day.

For the volunteering, I did my job in a pre-school in Cape Town. On my very first day, I was deeply touched by those innocent and warm-hearted children. They jumped onto me and crawled over my body without knowing who I am. It took me only several seconds to get along with them. But if you want to convince them or coach them to do something, you need to put some effort. And it was hard because I needed to think from their prospective and communicate in their “language”. In my two-week volunteering, I played with them, fed them, and told them the importance of sharing.

Last but not the least, I would like to recommend this program to those who have not done such things before. You will be regretful if you haven’t had this experience. So take your time and get enrolled!
