“Medical Internship”

General Impression

Overall Rating:    10 / 10

I had a wonderful experience in Cape Town and from the first moment I walked into the volunteer's house, it felt like I was home. Everybody is nice and welcoming. Being 24/7 with other volunteers made my days even better because I could share with them my day, my thoughts and also new adventures. The house manager is simply amazing and kind people and words cannot describe how happy I am to have met them. I have nothing but positive thoughts and I hope one day I'll be able to come back and visit.

Country

South Africa is a beautiful country: I will miss its colorful views and the nature that surrounds everything. It is also a very multicultural country and that can be seen in every corner.
However, it is important to remember to keep both eyes open as you are a tourist and not to trust random people. Other than that, there is so much to enjoy and explore and the time never feels enough!

Project & Staff

These last three weeks were amazing! Even if I didn't have a medical background (just basic knowledge), I felt extremely useful and I never missed a chance to learn something new. The staff at the clinic is nice and ready to help; also when they get to know you better and start trusting you more, they will give you more responsibility. The clinic offers different "fields" to work in (pharmacy, prep room, doctors, counselling, baby clinic and more). This experience thaught me a lot not only medically speaking, but also socially: volunteering in a community clinic shows you sides of the society that you would never experience as a tourist. I would recommend it!!

Tips

My tips are to take initiative, look for responsibilities at the clinic (ask if you can be helpful in any way or if they could show you how things work so that you can do them) and don't wait for the staff to give you orders.
Enjoy the experience until the very end and try to do as much as you can. Remember that there are so many volunteers that might have a similar bucket list, so never miss a chance to share an 'adventure' with them.
Have fun!
