“Pura vida!”

General Impression

Overall Rating:    8 / 10

I had a great time experiencing a new place and culture. I like that I was immersed into this and given a good amount of independence. I love that I didn’t get a “touristy luxury” feel and instead felt like I was using resources many people use and not having the luxuries of extra amenities.

Country

It’s a beautiful country with beautiful people. Pura vida. People on puerto Jimenez are hard workers who care about their environment. I felt safe walking the streets in the day and at night.

Project & Staff

That being said, a few downsides: at my school site, I was given other duties such as painting instead of teaching, which is fine, but I would have liked to know. Also, the schedules were a bit off- given one schedule by coordinator and then another by the teacher at the school. Also, we were told that our Corcovado add on was going to take us in the national park but we never went to the national park and instead did hikes outside the park.
[Thanks for raising this so we can improve the communication and excursions.]

Tips

Don’t expect luxury living. Bring lots of dry fit or sweat dry clothing, bring lots of sunscreen! Bring blankets if you think you get cold at night- usually thin sheets are provided. I didn’t find to need extra blankets except for areas like near corcovado. Schedule your taxis/ transport in advanced. Bring good walking shoes. Be prepared to share space with other people. Visit the chocolate farms! Swimming in the beaches are a must!
