“the people are the best part of it.”

General Impression

Overall Rating:    7 / 10

This volunteer project was a rewarding experience. Teaching illiterate women the basics of English and math felt empowering. Beyond the lessons, connecting with these women and learning about their lives was eye-opening and unforgettable. Weekends spent with fellow volunteers in Kathmandu and other cities added an extra dimension of fun and adventure to the trip. I wholeheartedly recommend this experience to anyone looking to make an impact while immersing themselves in a different culture.

Country

Nepal is truly a special country, characterized by the warmth and kindness of its people, who are incredibly welcoming. The village where I volunteered had a close-knit community and everyone looked out for one another. My host family, along with the families I worked with, took great care of the volunteers and always made sure we were comfortable. Experiencing Nepali culture firsthand was fascinating, from its Buddhist and Hindu traditions to the country's customs and etiquette.

Project & Staff

The local volunteer organization ensured everything ran smoothly; the induction upon arrival was well-structured and helped us understand the projects and our responsibilities. Moreover, the local team was always available for support and conducted an exit interview at the end of the project, showing their commitment to our feedback. Beyond the logistics of the project, working with the women was very rewarding - their eagerness to learn made the experience really meaningful.

Tips

Living with a host family is an enriching and unique experience, though it may take some time to adjust to a different way of life. From my experience, you'll settle in quickly, so trust the process and embrace the opportunity. If any challenges do come up, don't hesitate to reach out to the local team - they are always there to help. Also, take the time to connect with fellow volunteers, sharing the experience makes it even more memorable and enjoyable!
