“The kids are absolutely lovely!”

General Impression

Overall Rating:    10 / 10

I had a great time volunteering in Oaxaca. The city, the culture, the people, the food - it's just a wonderful place to stay. I definitely recommend staying with a host family - I was very lucky with mine and they turned into my second family within only 4 weeks.

Country

México has just become my favorite country! It's full of traditions, art, culture, pretty landscapes and lovely welcoming people.
Regarding the covid-situation: in Oaxaca people tend to wear face-masks everywhere and they make sure that you sanitize your hands every 10 minutes :) apart from this, life seems to be back to normal with only a small amount of limitations.

Project & Staff

I really liked the childcare program! Due to the pandemic, the kids only just started to come back to the Centro but I had the chance to give English classes during a few hours per day. The kids are absolutely lovely! However, I would definitely recommend good Spanish skills since the kids don't know English, wear face-masks and tend to be a bit shy after two years with only limited social interactions. I'm quite sure that the situation will further improve during the next months with more kids in the Centro and a wider range of tasks for volunteers.
The staff is very nice and helpful as well.

Tips

As I said before: I would highly recommend staying with a host family! Also my personal experience is, that a solid level of Spanish allows you to better connect with the people and the kids, so either come well prepared or take Spanish classes in Oaxaca (I didn't take any but I know from a friend that they are good!!)
