Teaching English (Pre-School)

Cusco, Peru

About The Project

This amazing project was created with the goal of helping to improve the English speaking abilities of the impoverished children of Cusco. Those on the teaching English program will work in one of a number of schools or community groups in Cusco. Volunteer teachers are giving local people the real opportunity to improve their skills, and thus their opportunities and lives. As is common in many of the worlds poorer communities, an ability to speak English unlocks a new world of possibilities for children and opens up many professional opportunities for the working-age, often within the service and tourism industries. By teaching children English language skills, a wealth of opportunities could be opened up for them later, from higher educational opportunities to jobs and a number of other ways to improve their future prospects. Please remember that schools in developing countries may feel disorganized and understaffed. This is the reason why volunteers are so badly needed.

Goals of this Project:

  • Provide free English language classes to children aged 4 to 5
  • Improve the future prospects of some of Peru’s most impoverished children, and help them to break the poverty cycle
  • Expose non-English speakers to native English speakers in order to improve pronunciation and conversational skills
  • Enable inter-cultural exchange which benefits both residents and international volunteers alike

How You Can Help

Volunteers play an integral role in achieving the goals of this project. Volunteers will have the opportunity to teach in pre-schools with younger children who are learning the basic concepts of the English language. The pre-school/nurseries desperately need volunteers and they will have the autonomy of devising their own lessons which could be taught in any sort of space. Lessons will sometimes be on a one-to-one basis or they may be in a small group. It is recommended that volunteers take teaching materials, books and lesson ideas with them. English speaking international volunteers tend to be great English language teachers as they impart a skill they have effectively spent their entire lives developing, and can effectively teach all the nuances that make up the English language. Because volunteers aren’t usually fluent Spanish speakers, local students have no choice but to learn English if they are to communicate and lessons progress quickly, with great results. No prior teaching experience is required, however a basic understanding of Spanish is, and we strongly recommend that volunteers take part in the Spanish courses offered by the team in Peru.

Volunteers on this project provide a valid and effective means of English language tuition. They will contribute in a number of ways and can expect to undertake the following tasks:

  • Teach English to classes of 4 and 5 year old children
  • Design lesson plans and activities
  • Network with local residents and local project staff

Requirements

18yo+ / Qualification / Experience

Love Volunteers welcomes all those 18 years and over who wish to help create a brighter future for children through the power of education. This project best suits those with experience and/or qualifications in the field of childhood development and education, though volunteers who simply wish to explore an interest in this field are also welcomed as there are many ways you can assist in the classroom. Whist not mandatory, completing a TEFL course prior to joining this project would prove to be highly beneficial. Volunteers on this project will need an understanding of Spanish in order to communicate effectively with staff and students. Importantly, all applicants must first and foremost have a genuine willingness to help, show drive and initiative, and bring a positive 'can-do' attitude. If this sounds like you, we want you on the team!

Project Location

Peru, Cusco

This program is hosted in Cusco, high in the Peruvian Andes. Once the capital of the ancient Inca Empire, Cusco is now known as the gateway to the world heritage site of Machu Picchu, for its archaeological remains and its stunning Spanish colonial architecture. Located in the heart of the 'old city' the central square of Plaza de Armas is the areas tourist hub and is filled with cafes, restaurants and dozens of trinket shops to explore, all set among the arcades, carved wooden balconies and Incan wall ruins, including the baroque Santo Domingo Convent which was built on top of the Incan Temple of the Sun (Qoricancha). Cusco is a fascinating city to find yourself in and a wonderful place to experience the challenges and the joys of volunteering.

Accommodation & Meals

Host Family / Meals Included

As with all of our wonderful programs in Cusco, volunteers on this project are accommodated with one of our friendly local host families, where breakfast and dinner of traditional Peruvian cuisine are provided daily. All home-stay families have been fully vetted by out local team and are located within a short walk from each other, making hanging out with other volunteers easy. Plus, it is only a 10 minute taxi ride to the tourist heart of Cusco – Plaza de Armas – where a multitude of restaurants, cafes and bars are available. All host families have standard amenities available, including comfortable beds, hot showers and modern bathrooms (Peruvian Starndard). Wi-Fi is also available (additional charges may apply in some cases). All families have experience hosting international volunteers. Depending on the time of year it may be necessary to share a room with other volunteers. Living with a local family truly is the best way to throw oneself into the local culture and to meet people who will become lifelong friends!

Host families will provide breakfast, lunch and dinner, however it is often easier to buy lunch at a nearby cafe. Peruvian food is delicious and, yes, different. It is based around rice, potatoes, fish and lots of locally-grown fruit, such as cherimoya, lucuma, citrus fruits and pineapple. Pollo a la Brasa, also known as Peruvian chicken, is one of the most consumed dishes in the country. Originally only seasoned with salt and cooked in charcoal today the chicken is marinated in a “secret” mixture mainly consisting of vinegar, spices, dark beer or soy sauce, and then grilled in especially fabricated Pollo a la brasa ovens. Salsas, sauces or dips are an essential part of the Peruvian cuisine and a must on every table.

For volunteers, staying in Peru means they gain something that mere travelers miss out on: a ‘live’ authentic glimpse into family life and the character of the people. By having the opportunity to stay with a host family and by working right alongside the local population volunteers can really experience all that Peru has to offer!
