Teaching English

Teaching English

About The Project

The main objective of this program is to enrich the everyday lives of children and older adults who are at risk of social exclusion due to their diverse origins and cultures. Many people in Italy lack access to quality English language education because of under-resourced schools and limited learning opportunities.

Volunteers assist in after-school centres where you will work with groups of older learners in classroom-based settings, as well as with children, where learning often takes place outdoors. By bringing fresh perspectives, ideas, and cultural exchange into these projects, volunteers’ skills, knowledge, and life experiences will motivate learners and broaden their worldviews.

Goals of this project:

  • Support the local organisation in providing equal access to education.

  • Assist in structuring the programme according to students’ needs.

  • Plan and teach English language lessons.

  • Create engaging educational activities that incorporate the English language.

How You Can Help

Volunteers work with both children and older adults, supporting learners with English language development and homework. You will be part of a team responsible for creating an inclusive environment that encourages social interaction through fun, informal activities, often taking place outdoors.

When working with children and young people, you will alternate theory-based lessons with physical and creative activities conducted in English, such as songs, games, and outdoor play, while also assisting with daily routines, including lunch and snack times.

Teaching older learners is approached as a mutual exchange: while they improve their English, you will have the opportunity to learn some Italian. Lessons will focus on practical vocabulary related to specific sectors such as tourism, administration, healthcare, and others, depending on participants’ professional or personal needs.

International volunteers are considered a fundamental part of the programme, so flexibility, adaptability, and openness to new challenges are essential.

Volunteers on this project will contribute in a number of ways and can expect to undertake the following tasks:

  • Plan and teach English lessons and activities
  • Assist with daily routines
  • Share skills, experience and provide cultural exchange.

Requirements

18yo+

Love Volunteers welcomes all those 18 years and over who wish to help create a brighter future for locals through the power of education. This project suits those with experience in the field of education, though volunteers who simply wish to explore an interest in this field are also welcomed as there are many ways you can assist in the classroom. Whist not mandatory, completing a TEFL course prior to joining this project would prove to be beneficial. Ideally, volunteers on this project will have at least a basic knowledge of the local language in order to communicate effectively with staff and students, though this is not a pre-requisite and English is commonly spoken. Importantly, all applicants must first and foremost have a genuine willingness to help, show drive and initiative, and bring a positive 'can-do' attitude. If this sounds like you, we want you on the team!

Additionally, volunteers applying to join this program will be required to supply to following documentation:

  • Emergency contact
  • Police check

Project Location

Italy, Rome

Rome is one of those places that somehow lives up to all the hype—and then surprises you anyway. Loud, beautiful, chaotic, and deeply moving, the city offers visitors the experience of walking through layers of history. Ancient Rome is everywhere: the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and the Pantheon are casually woven into daily life, where a 2,000-year-old ruin might sit beside a busy coffee bar.

At the same time, Rome, the capital of Italy, faces a range of social, economic, and environmental challenges. From a social perspective, the city struggles to support a growing number of migrants and refugees who require access to language education, job training, and social integration services. Recent economic downturns have also had a significant impact, increasing food insecurity among vulnerable populations.

Rome is ideal for those who love history, art, food, and places with real personality. It may not be polished, but it is unforgettable.
