Sustainable Farming on São Miguel Island

Sustainable Farming

About The Project

Based on São Miguel Island, this program is perfect for those passionate about agriculture, sustainability, and social inclusion. Volunteers work alongside local farmers and people with disabilities, as well as individuals facing challenges in entering the job market. Your tasks will include planting, watering, gardening, and supporting other agricultural activities, all while learning about sustainable farming practices that respect nature and the environment.

This program is ideal for those interested in hands-on work in agriculture and social inclusion, while contributing to a more sustainable and inclusive future. Whether you have prior farming experience or are new to the field, you will gain valuable skills while making a meaningful difference in both the environment and the local community.

Goals of this project:

  • Plant Gardens: Assist in planting and caring for gardens.
  • Water Plants: Help water plants and maintain healthy growth.
  • Weeding: Remove weeds to ensure proper garden care.
  • Craft with Recyclables: Participate in crafting activities using recyclable materials.
  • Support People with Disabilities: Work alongside individuals with disabilities in agricultural tasks.
  • Assist with Employment Barriers: Help people facing challenges in entering the job market by supporting their work on the farm.

How You Can Help

By joining this program, you’ll play an active role in various tasks that support sustainable farming and community engagement. You’ll assist with gardening, including planting, weeding, watering, and harvesting vegetables and legumes. You’ll also participate in craft workshops, creating new objects from recyclable materials to promote sustainability. Additionally, you’ll help with organizing events and supporting the sale of handmade crafts and food products. Finally, you’ll contribute to content creation by helping the organization promote the work of participants and volunteers, showcasing the impact of the program and its community.

The capital, Ponta Delgada, blends historical charm with modern life, where cobblestone streets lead to quaint squares and ancient churches.

The food here is a highlight, with local dishes like the famous "cozido das furnas" and fresh seafood. After a day of volunteering and exploring, relaxing with a drink and delicious Azorean cuisine is the perfect way to unwind.
