Map of South Africa: Map of South AfricaVolunteering in South Africa is an incredibly rewarding and worthwhile experience. A country which is healing after years of division, South Africa offers volunteers a unique experience to live within the local community. Our South African partner is dedicated to providing high quality, affordable international volunteering. The well-established team has played a crucial role in helping the local community for almost 40 years. Based in Cape Town they will assist in making your volunteer experience the most memorable yet!
During their placement volunteers make a valuable contribution assisting at local community projects. Our partner has worked very closely with disadvantaged communities, projects and institutions. The organisation endeavours to make a difference by offering development programs, training skills, stimulating local economies and creating opportunities for people from different cultures. It’s a chance to learn from others, to respect other cultures and to embrace the concept of working together. Through this process we hope to achieve greater development within these communities. We believe that international voluntary services help empower local communities to develop self reliance and sustainability.
Although South Africa is the largest economy in Africa the very uneven balance of wealth means there continues to be serious economic and environmental problems, as well as the increasing prevalence of HIV/AIDS.

A Love Volunteers registration fee of US$235 (approximately €170) is charged in addition to the program fees and covers any placements you undertake for twelve months from the start of your first placement. The fee is refundable if you choose not to volunteer more than three months prior to the start of your initial placement. This fee ensures 24/7 pre- and post-placement support from Love Volunteers, checking and vetting of local organisations, a comprehensive information pack, as well as administration and marketing costs. Given Love Volunteers is a not-for-profit organisation we also ask volunteers to cover any bank charges incurred by international money transfers.
Food and Accommodation
Volunteer Accommodation: Volunteer AccommodationVolunteers will mainly be accommodated with host families in the greater Cape Peninsula area.
Volunteers who choose an education placement will either be accommodated with host families or at a volunteer house in the city centre. The volunteer house is dormitory accommodation and while we do out best to ensure your preference between the two options, we can't guarantee where you will be housed. It is important to note that all homestays are located at least 30-40 minutes from the centre of Cape Town.
Volunteers on the Wildlife or Monkey Rehabilitation Project will be accommodated in shared staffing accommodation which are separated by gender. Adventure and Surf volunteers will be accommodated at backpacker accommodation or a volunteer house close to the beach.
The accommodation is always safe and secure and you will always be placed with at least one other volunteer. Bedding is provided, but we recommend that volunteers bring their own sleeping bag. Toiletries, towels and any personal hygiene equipment are the volunteer’s responsibility.
Breakfasts generally consist of coffee, toast and cereal. A typical lunch will consists of a packed sandwich (made by yourself) and possibly fruit. Dinners consist of good wholesome South African meals which could include dishes such as stews, casseroles, as well as vegetables and salad. Special dietary requirements can be catered for, but volunteers need to tell us in advance.
Volunteers on the Monkey Rehabilitation programme will be provided with two meals per day and snacks.
Please note that there are no meals included during orientation.
Orientation
Volunteers Drumming: Volunteers DrummingOrientation is compulsory and necessary to prepare you for your stay in South Africa. Introduction to our partner's office, South Africa, program rules, travel opportunities etc will be covered. The orientation will also give you a chance to meet other volunteers.
Volunteers are encouraged to arrive in Cape Town on Sunday. They will be transported to their accommodation and join a short welcome session.
On Monday volunteers attend the orientation session, after which they are transported to their homestay. Volunteers have the rest of the day to get to know their family and community. Volunteers who have been placed at a city project will stay on at the volunteer house and have a session with the house manager and get to know their surrounding area.
On Tuesday volunteers leave for their project and are introduced to the staff that they will be working with. Projects are typically within walking distance or a short taxi ride. If public transport is required, the cost should be covered by the volunteer.
A Typical Week
South Africa Volunteering: South Africa VolunteeringThe structure of the week varies for different projects, but we aim to be flexible. Provided some notice is given we will try to accommodate your plans. That said, a typical week volunteering in South Africa looks something like this:
Weekdays: At about 7am you'll have breakfast at your homestay or volunteer house. At 7.30-8am you'll make your way to the project to start at about 8.30am. Here you'll meet local staff who will start you on the tasks for the day. You'll get breaks throughout the day and finish between 3pm and 5pm.
In the afternoon you are free to socialize or perhaps take a trip to the shops or visit a cafe or restaurant. Alternatively, you can continue helping out on your project.
Weekends: Depending on the program, weekends are generally free and volunteers will have time to relax or explore other parts of Cape Town and South Africa. Most volunteers who are placed at homestays book in at the volunteer house over weekends (for a fee) to meet up and enjoy the city life. Long weekends can be taken if volunteers need to go on safaris, or travel to places further away such as the Garden Route. Please check with your projects prior to arranging any trips, as days off from your project have to be approved by your project supervisor and local office.
About the Country
Volunteer with Kids: Volunteer with KidsSouth Africa is a huge country with varied landscapes. The country has a diverse population and is home to 11 official languages. South Africa is renowned for its wines and is one of the world's largest producers of gold. It has a strong economy and is an influential player in African politics.
Although rural areas remain among the poorest and least developed parts of the world and poverty in the townships can be appalling, things are improving. South Africa boasts a well developed infrastructure and has all the modern amenities and technologies. The government is stable and although corruption is common, the primary political parties generally have a high level of respect for democratic institutions and human rights.
Cape Town, the mother city, the legislative capital and seat of Parliament, boasts famous sights such as Table Mountain and the Cape of Good Hope. There are the vinyards near Stellenbosch, the Whale Coast along the Overberg, Agulhas, where the Atlantic and Indian Ocean meet, and the Cape Floral Region. One popular attraction is the Garden Route, which runs along the Southern Coast from Mossel Bay to Port Elizabeth, with cities like Knysna and ostrich capital Oudtshoorn.
