Love Volunteers' partner in Peru urgently needs volunteers for it programs in Cusco and other regions. Working closely with our local partner, we offer the chance to teach, work with children in orphanages and undertake medical placements, as well as a number of other programs. Your efforts as a volunteer will drastically improve the lives of people in the local communities.
As a volunteer in Peru, you can be sure that your skills and expertise are sorely needed. And the satisfaction and fulfilment that this can give a volunteer is not something that one often gets from a job or internship.
Plus as a volunteer here you will get a chance to interact with others on your program and with the community that your are serving on a day-to-day basis. You will be meeting people whose experiences of life may challenge your assumptions and values. You will meet people who are curious about you, and you will be learning all the time about this wonderful country, its people and its language.
Through volunteering in Peru you can gain insight into this fascinating South American country. And the flexibility of duration that our volunteer programs offer means that you can sign yourself up for as little as a one-week stay, or upwards of a six-month commitment. Lonely Planet's Guide to Peru is a great resource if you need further information about the country.
Start and Duration
Placements in Peru begin every Monday and volunteers in Peru can participate from as little as one week. There is no cap on the length of time one can stay.
Volunteer Requirements
Volunteers in Peru must be at least 18 years old at the start of the placements (unless accompanied by an adult). For orphanage placements Spanish is not essential, but a basic grasp of the language is very helpful. Teaching placements require at least a basic level of Spanish as students may have limited English. Volunteers in Peru undertaking medical placements should have an intermediate level of Spanish. Apply to volunteer now!
We recommend you attend the very affordable Spanish courses offered by our team locally even if you already know some of the language.

Language Courses
We strongly recommend volunteers take advantage of the very affordable Spanish language courses offered by our local team in Peru. The courses run for 1-6 hours per day. For those volunteers in Peru with very little Spanish they are incredibly helpful and allow you to completely immerse yourself in the local culture and offer more to those you are helping.

A Love Volunteers registration fee of US$235 (approximately €170) is charged in addition to the program fees and covers any placements you undertake for twelve months from the start of your first placement. The fee is refundable if you choose not to volunteer more than three months prior to the start of your initial placement. This fee ensures 24/7 pre- and post-placement support from Love Volunteers, checking and vetting of local organisations, a comprehensive information pack, as well as administration and marketing costs. Given Love Volunteers is a not-for-profit organisation we also ask volunteers to cover any bank charges incurred by international money transfers.
Accommodation and Meals
You will stay in either a volunteer house or with a local Peruvian family while volunteering in Cusco. The volunteer house is filled first, but you can guarantee a place with a local family by paying an additional US$35 (€27) per week. The volunteer house has many of the benefits of staying with a family, but with less rules and no curfew. All families have been fully vetted by out local team and have experience hosting volunteers in Peru. You may have to share a room with another volunteer in Peru, or you may have a room to yourself. We will always try and work out the best option for you or your group depending on your requirements. Part of your program fee is given to your host family to cover the costs of accommodation and food. It truly is the best way to throw yourself into the local culture and you are bound to meet people who will become lifelong friends!
Your host family will give you breakfast, lunch and dinner and Peruvian food is delicious and, yes, different. It is based around rice, potatoes, fish and lots of locally-grown fruit, such as cherimoya, lucuma, citrus fruits and pineapple. No doubt you will taste the national drink, pisco sour. This concoction is made by combining the Peruvian equivalent of Italian grappa, lemon, egg white and a pinch of cinnamon.
For volunteers, staying in Peru means they gain something that mere travellers miss out on: a ‘live’ authentic glimpse into family life and the character of the people. By having the opportunity to stay with a host family and by working right alongside the local population volunteers can really expereience all that Peru has to offer.
Orientation
Upon your arrival in Peru you will spend a day finding out about your host country, city and family. Our local team will tell you everything you need to know about the local customs, safety, rules and expectations and, of course, about your volunteering in Peru experience. You'll be given a walking tour of the area in and around our partner’s facilities and get a chance to meet other volunteers and plan your “extra-curricular” activities while in Peru.
A Typical Week
While we aim to have some flexibility in our programs, it is important to remember that volunteering in Peru comes with responsibilities. While it may be possible to take the odd day off to do some traveling its important to give plenty of notice and remember that people are relying on you. While a day or two per month is fine, taking numerous and regular days off is frowned upon. That said, a typical week volunteering in Peru looks something like this:
Weekdays: Between 7am and 8.30am you can expect to have breakfast with your host family. Placements are usually arranged into shifts so you may find yourself working in the morning until about 12-1pm, or in the afternoon until about 5-6pm. Some programs, such as English teaching, may require evening shifts. In your free time you can explore the local area, play with the kids (if you’re at a teaching or childcare assignment), hang out with other volunteers in Peru or attend Spanish classes. In the evening, if not working, you can have dinner with your host family, or visit a local restaurant with friends.
Weekends: Many volunteers choose to spend the weekend visiting cultural sites and other cities in Peru. Alternatively, you can just relax at home or in a café. Long weekends can be easily arranged locally to allow trips further afield (Machu Picchu being the most popular in this part of the world).
About the Country
With its more than 5,000 years of history and a wealth of assorted remnants of its former glory days, Peru is noteworthy not just for its astounding evidence of human activity and religious practices over millennia; it is of course also striking geographically. Dominated by the spine that is the Andes mountain range, Peru is home to stunning lakes, sand dunes, llamas a dazzling coast and, last but not least, Inca treasures.
Besides the dizzying splendour of Machu Picchu, the ultimate destination of the classic 26-mile Inca Trail encompassing snow-topped peaks, no stay in Peru would be complete without a visit to Lake Titicaca with its bizarre floating islands. The white city of Arequipa, a faded relic of colonial days, and the mighty Amazon with its remote village settlements and deeply forested banks, and Máncora, with its up-market beach resorts and surf, are all worth a visit. Cuzco was once the Inca capital and is a Unesco World Heritage Site. Much-visited by tourists, there are astounding nearby ruins such as the stone-walled fortress Sacsayhuaman.
When volunteering in Peru, be sure to build sufficient travelling time into your stay to cover at least the aforementioned minimum sights. Other slightly less well-known spots to consider visiting include Ayacucho in the Andes with its friendly people and lively market, the desert town of Nazca famed for the ‘Nazca Lines’, giant geoglyphs, ancient lines marked out in the sand forming semi-abstract shapes and the large but picturesque coastal town of Trujillo, with its near-perfect climate and long sandy shoreline.
