Childcare and Development

Cherkasy, Ukraine

About The Project

The mission of this program is to care for the orphaned, abandoned and impoverished children of Ukraine. There are more than 100,000 children in more than 140 orphanages in Ukraine, and these facilities are often desperately underfunded and understaffed. Volunteers supply hands on care to the children, helping with their education, playing games and arranging fun activities during leisure time, like sports or trips to the park. The children in orphanages require a lot of care, attention and most importantly, companionship. Volunteers play a hugely significant part in the lives of these vulnerable children by simply showing they care, and giving them hope. Once back home, volunteers might help further by fundraising, organizing events such as auctions, and thus helping to provide the medication, food, clothing, vitamins, toys and other necessities that are in such short supply.

Goals of this Project:

  • Provide essential childcare to vulnerable children of Ukraine
  • Improve the future prospects of the children in Ukraine
  • Give impoverished children quality care, compassion and a sense of hope
  • Enable inter-cultural exchange which benefits both locals and international volunteers alike.

How You Can Help

Volunteers play an essential role in helping disadvantaged children through this amazing program. Participants will spend their time taking care of children and assist the local staff as needed. Volunteers will be busy working with the children, helping feed them and other care essentials, playing games and are encouraged to use their skills and interests to develop fun things for the children to do such as music and dance and arts and crafts. The volunteer activities involved on this program include the teaching of English to a range of ages, playing with the children in order to build up their confidence and improve their social skills, and taking part in or devising extra-curricular sessions in such subjects as drama, dance and assorted sports. Volunteers can also become involved by assisting local staff. Former volunteers on these programs report how affectionate and open the children were, curious to know about the volunteers and eager to learn and play. If the placement falls in the summer, volunteers may be assisting at a summer camp attended by the orphans. Volunteers may want to keep in contact with the orphans beyond the life of the placement, and are welcome to do so.

Volunteers will contribute in a number of ways on this program and can expect to undertake the following tasks:

  • Help to feed and care for the children
  • Attend to and interact with the children
  • Create activities and entertain the children with games and songs, etc

Requirements

18yo+

Love Volunteers welcomes all those 18 years and over who wish to assist in the ongoing support and development of marginalized and at-risk children of Ukraine. This highly interactive and varied project does not require participants to have a background in the field of childcare, as there are many ways you can assist. However, volunteers with suitable education, qualifications or experience are highly sought after. Regardless, a volunteer’s individual role can often be tailored to suit their particular skills and interests. Importantly, all applicants must first and foremost have a genuine willingness to help, show drive and initiative, and bring a positive 'can-do' attitude. If this sounds like you, we want you on the team!

Additionally, volunteers applying to join this program will be required to supply to following documentation:

  • Emergency contact
  • Police check

Project Location

Ukraine, Cherkasy

Our volunteer projects are centered on Cherkasy which is a city situated in central Ukraine on the bank of the Dnipro River in the area of the Kremenchuk Reservoir. It is about 200km (124 mi) south of the nation’s capital, Kiev.

The city area is 17kms long and just 8km wide. From the North-West Cherkasy is surrounded by forest - Cherkaskiy Bir (Cherkasy Forest), which is the biggest natural pine forest in Ukraine. Today Cherkasy maintains a tranquil atmosphere quite different from that of larger industrial cities found throughout Eastern Europe. Influenced by its ties to agriculture, visitors are treated to “small town” hospitality. Residents still have time to stop and assist visitors who look lost or unsure of their surroundings. Cherkasy is a truly eye-opening place to visit and an even better place to volunteer!
