About the Internship
Our Bangkok based programs are on hold - but programs in Chiang Mai are up and running with precautions in place to protect the community and volunteers alike.
This exciting program offers Medical Internships for medical students in a number of notable private and public full-service hospitals in Bangkok. In all cases, volunteers/interns are able to work closely with a supervising physician, and are paired with a full-time doctor who they will shadow on daily rounds. Interns are only placed with doctors with an exceptional command of English. These are highly qualified professionals, many of whom have been educated in the US or UK. Intern responsibilities vary according to their own qualifications, experience and/or comfort level. Participants with a full medical degree will often enjoy far more access when it comes to administering care and interacting with patients, but it is important to note that most interns only observe or help out with very minor tasks. While every aspect of the internship is carefully monitored by the supervising staff, it is important to note that medical interns would never get this far ‘behind the scenes’ in a Western hospital, so it really is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for medical students.
Goals of this Project:
- Provide essential medical care to the people of Thailand
- Improve the health and wellbeing of some of the poorest people in the world
- Expose international volunteers to different conditions and health issues.
- Enable inter-cultural exchange which benefits both locals and international volunteers alike.
How You Can Help
Volunteers play an essential role in providing medical care in Thailand. Depending on current needs and on what hospital volunteers are placed, interns may be able to choose which department they work in and in most cases it is possible to spend supplemental time in a second department as well. Some of the areas medical interns can work in include; Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Parasitology, Cell Biology, Molecular Genetics & Biology, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Otolaryngology, Psychiatry, Anesthesiology, OBGYN, Pathology and Forensic, Emergency Medicine, Orthopedics, Physical Rehabilitation, Ophthalmology, Radiology, ENT, Dental, Cardiology, HBOT, Underwater and Aviation Medicine and Rehabilitation.
The basic project calls for interns to work from 8am – 4pm, Monday – Friday. Depending upon the working schedule of the paired doctor or nurse and area of the hospital an intern is placed, the times and days of work may fluctuate. As with all Medical placements, patience and flexibility with work schedules is greatly appreciated.
Volunteers will contribute in a number of ways on this program and can expect to undertake the following tasks:
- Provide essential medical care to locals, dependent on volunteers qualifications, skills and experience
- Undertake routine hospital tasks as required
- Work on health and education campaigns
This program offers an amazing opportunity for suitable applicants who are 18 years and over to work alongside qualified medical professionals and gain first-hand insight into Thailand's healthcare system. It is open to those with experience and/or education in the field of medicine, as well as med-school and pre-med students. Ideally, volunteers on this project will have at least a basic knowledge of the local language in order to communicate effectively with patients and staff, though this is not a pre-requisite. Naturally, all applicants must also have a genuine willingness to help, show drive and initiative, and bring a positive 'can-do' attitude. If this sounds like you, we want you on the team!
Additionally, volunteers applying to join this program will be required to supply to following documentation:
- Emergency contact
- Medical Qualification
- Police check
Volunteers on this exciting program have the opportunity to explore Thailand's 'City of Angels'. The city packs so much punch it is hard to know where to start! With its world renowned food, famous markets, boat trips to catch a breeze on the impressive Chao Phraya river and streets that reward exploration at every turn it is no surprise that Bangkok rates as one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Volunteers have the unique opportunity to see behind the scenes of this amazing city and help a people who are among the most hospitable you will ever meet.
