Volunteer Teaching Program
Our Bangkok based programs are on hold - but programs in Chiang Mai are up and running with precautions in place to protect the community and volunteers alike.
On this essential education program, volunteers are placed in schools which have high levels of staff shortages as a result of limited funding and inadequate resourcing. In both locations the schools are always thrilled at the opportunity to welcome native English speakers. Regardless of whether volunteers have a teaching background, their presence alone gives students and faculty the chance to practice their English skills as they would in the real world. The role of an English volunteer in Thailand can be varied as it takes into account the needs of the school, the time of year, as well as the volunteers comfort level. Volunteers play an invaluable role in teaching children and supporting their educational needs, helping them to increase their chances of higher levels of education, and thus the chance for future employment and a brighter future.
Goals of this Project:
- Provide English language skills and teach other subjects to vulnerable children in Thailand
- Teach and interact with marginalized children in Thailand
- Improve the future prospects of some of Thailand’s most impoverished children, and help them to break the poverty cycle
- Expose volunteers and children to different people and cultures
How You Can Help
Volunteers play an important role in helping improve the education of the impoverished children of Thailand. On day one of their teaching placement, each volunteer will be paired with a Thai teacher. They can simply help out with daily lessons or if they have the confidence and the drive to do their own lesson planning, they can lead their own class. The students love it, and it gives Thai teachers the chance to catch up on projects and paperwork. Please note, all volunteers who will be working directly with children must file a certified police background check before their start date. Volunteers will give back on this great program by sharing their knowledge and helping children achieve their goals, while also gaining the chance to learn so much about the children and people of Thailand. This promises to be a very beneficial program for both volunteers and the wonderful children of Thailand.
Volunteers will contribute in a number of ways and can expect to undertake the following tasks:
- Teaching English and other subjects to children attending the school
- Assisting teachers and volunteers in classes
- Teach subjects the volunteer has an interest in (i.e. sport, music, art)
- Create games in English for the students and spend time playing with students
Love Volunteers welcomes all those 18 years and over who wish to help create a brighter future for children through the power of education. This project best suits those with experience and/or qualifications in the field of childhood development and education, though volunteers who simply wish to explore an interest in this field are also welcomed as there are many ways you can assist in the classroom. Whist not mandatory, completing a TEFL course prior to joining this project would prove to be highly beneficial. Ideally, volunteers on this project will have at least a basic knowledge of the local language in order to communicate effectively with staff and students, though this is not a pre-requisite. Importantly, all applicants must first and foremost have a genuine willingness to help, show drive and initiative, and bring a positive 'can-do' attitude. If this sounds like you, we want you on the team!
Additionally, volunteers applying to join this program will be required to supply to following documentation:
- Emergency contact
- Police check
Volunteers on this worthwhile program have the opportunity to explore Thailand's 'City of Angels'. The city packs so much punch it is hard to know where to start! With its world renowned food, famous markets, boat trips to catch a breeze on the impressive Chao Phraya river and streets that reward exploration at every turn it is no surprise that Bangkok rates as one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Volunteers have the unique opportunity to see behind the scenes, live the life and immerse in the culture, helping a nation of the most welcoming people you will ever meet.

Arrival & Orientation
You will be met on arrival into Bangkok by our local representative and taken back to the Volunteer House to settle in, relax and meet with fellow volunteers and your hosts. The following day the Orientation Weekend begins, designed to give an insight into Thai culture, learn some basic Thai words and phrases, negotiate the public transport system, including getting to and from your project and basically set you up to get the very most out of your placement from day one. The two day orientation is a great chance to see a little of this vibrant city with the help of expert guides and in the company of other volunteers. It will also allow you to purchase a local SIM and data package should you wish, withdraw or exchange Thai Baht and ask any last minute questions.

Accommodation & Meals
Volunteers on this program are accommodated at the contemporary Yard Hostel in the hip Ari neighbourhood of Bangkok. Popular with locals for its cafes, bars and restaurants and as yet largely undiscovered by tourists, Ari is the perfect location to soak up the modern vibe of Bangkok.
Rooms are dormitory style, shared by up to 4 people and split by gender. The hostel provides all the modern amenities required for a comfortable stay, including western-style bathrooms, hot running water and free Wi-Fi in all areas. A house bar and 3 restaurants make dining and socialising easy. A private locker is available in all rooms and laundry facilities are available for a small fee. Bed linen is provided so volunteers need only bring their own towel and personal toiletries and a padlock for the locker.
The hostel is conveniently located close to public transport (Ari BTS Sky train station is an 8min walk) and bicycles are free to hire from the hostel.
Breakfast is provided daily at the hostel from 8:00am to 10:30am and a packed breakfast can be arranged when needed. Lunch is included on weekdays at the program site and dinners are an excellent opportunity to relax at a restaurant in the hostel or explore the city and dine at one of the numerous eateries offering Thai or international cuisine.
Thai dishes use an abundance of fresh ingredients, herbs and spices and are a taste sensation. Be sure to try the coconut based curries such as Kaeng Khiao Wan’ (Thai Green Curry) and fruit based salads such as pomelo and green mango. Delicious!
