The Women's Program
Those with a passion for helping the marginalized will find this program helping women in need hugely rewarding. This essential initiative is based in the poor suburb of Huaycán, on the outskirts of Peru’s capital Lima. The program provides free educational workshops and classes throughout the week, working hard to build a strong community among local women. In a disadvantaged community, women often bear the brunt of a poor education system, health issues and abuse. This program aims to support women in need, giving them a hand up so they lead a healthier and happier life. Run by a not-for-profit community-based organization, participants on the program can study certificate programs, English language, computer literacy and artisan programs that teach them the skills to make and sell their craft. International volunteers will find this to be a hugely beneficial program and will learn a great deal about women’s empowerment programs and the Peruvian culture. Join this amazing program that supports marginalised women and help them, and their families thrive.
Goals of this Project:
- Provide essential teaching and support to vulnerable women
- Improve the future prospects of women who have been discriminated against
- Give impoverished women the skills to support themselves and thrive
- Enable inter-cultural exchange which benefits both locals and international volunteers alike
How You Can Help
Volunteers are sought to help support this wonderful program and teach women essential skills to change their lives. The initiative has a variety of certificate courses on offer, along with English language, computer skills and specialized artisan courses. These courses include fashion design, graphic design and email marketing, photography and business development. Because many of the women in the program have suffered from abuse and neglect, this program requires a commitment of at least eight weeks from volunteers to build trust and to create a secure environment. Volunteers are desperately needed who can teach women computer literacy such as how to send an email and basic Word skills. An advanced level of Spanish is needed to teach this course. The certificate course in financial education teaches women the skills to start their own business or learn more around financial management at home. Regardless of the program, international volunteers will find they are teaching disadvantaged women eager to learn, offering them compassion and comradery. Any volunteer who aims to help women in need will find this an extremely worthy project to be part of.
Volunteers will contribute in a number of ways and can expect to undertake the following tasks:
- Spend time with the women to boost their confidence
- Help teach English, financial management, computer literacy and other essentials to women in need
- Teach women about their rights
- Teach basic life skills and income generating methods
Love Volunteers welcomes all those 18 years and over who wish to help us provide support to some of Peru's most marginalized and vulnerable women. While this challenging project does not require participants to have a background in the fields of social work, counselling and/or Women’s studies, as there are many ways you can assist, volunteers with suitable education, qualifications or experience are highly sought after. Regardless, a volunteer’s individual role can often be tailored to suit their particular skills and interests. All applicants must of course display a genuine willingness to help, show drive and initiative, and bring a positive 'can-do' attitude. If this sounds like you, we want you on the team!
Additionally, volunteers applying to join this program will be required to supply to following documentation:
- Emergency contact
- Police check

Accommodation & Meals
Volunteers on this program are accommodated within a comfortable volunteer guest house, located in the heart of the project community of Huaycan and within 2 km of both the project site and local team's office. Volunteers are provided with a comfortable shared bedroom and shared bathroom, separated by gender, and thanks to the variety and popularity of this program, they will have the opportunity to meet and socialize with other like-minded people from around the world. The house can accommodate up to 14 volunteers at one time and WiFi, hot showers, all meals, two common areas, a dining room and laundry services are all available onsite. The volunteer house is well managed and is a perfect home away from home. A wonderful base for your stay in Lima!
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included daily during the working week, which is Friday to Tuesday. Breakfast and lunch only are provided on 'free-days' (Wednesdays and Thursdays) though volunteers often use this time to eat out while exploring the local community or taking day trips to Lima.
Peruvian food is delicious and, yes, different. It is based around rice, potatoes, fish and lots of locally-grown fruit, such as cherimoya, lucuma, citrus fruits and pineapple. Pollo a la Brasa, also known as Peruvian chicken, is one of the most consumed dishes in the country. Originally only seasoned with salt and cooked in charcoal, today the chicken is marinated in a “secret” mixture mainly consisting of vinegar, spices, dark beer or soy sauce, and then grilled in specially fabricated Pollo a la brasa ovens. Salsas, sauces or dips are an essential part of the Peruvian cuisine and a must on every table. Yum!
