Orphanage Volunteering India

The Orphanage Program

Due to extreme poverty, gender bias towards males and ill health, thousands of orphans in India are given refuge in orphanages and shelter homes run by various non-governmental organizations. The children who find themselves living at one of these facilities have often come from tremendously difficult and traumatic circumstances, leaving them distressed and detached from the joys of childhood we so often take for granted. The aim of this wonderful program then is to assist in helping with, and caring for these neglected children, and the assistance of international volunteers is desperately needed. Volunteers will participate in the daily routines and can make a great contribution just by being caring and giving the children some much-needed attention. By being there to offer care and compassion, volunteers are making a huge impact on the lives of these wonderful children.

Goals of this Project:

  • Provide essential childcare to vulnerable children in Delhi
  • Improve the future prospects of the children in Delhi
  • Give impoverished and vulnerable children quality care, compassion and a sense of hope
  • Enable inter-cultural exchange which benefits both locals and international volunteers alike.

How You Can Help

By taking part in this wonderful program, volunteers will be based at one of several orphanages in and around the suburbs of Delhi, including Noida and Gurgaon, and will assist by providing love, care, affection, warmth and education to the orphans. Love Volunteers on this project also assist the children with their education by taking extracurricular lessons, assisting with homework and helping with general education on life skills such as personal hygiene. In many of the orphanage placements, volunteers will have the option to live on-site at the orphanage with the children or at the volunteer guest house. Volunteers who stay at the orphanage do not need to travel every day to and from the project, and thus are able to spend more time with the children.

Volunteers will contribute in a number of ways on this program and can expect to undertake the following tasks:

  • Help to feed and care for the children
  • Help with feeding, bathing and dressing the children
  • Supply general care and compassion to the children
  • Spend time on exercise activities with the children
  • Organize and facilitate games and play time for the children
  • Educate the children about personal and environmental hygiene
  • Help in other activities with help of orphanage staff

Requirements

18yo+

Love Volunteers welcomes all those 18 years and over who wish to assist in the ongoing support and development of marginalized and at-risk children of India. This highly interactive and varied project does not require participants to have a background in the field of childcare, as there are many ways you can assist. However, volunteers with suitable education, qualifications or experience are highly sought after. Regardless, a volunteer’s individual role can often be tailored to suit their particular skills and interests. Importantly, all applicants must first and foremost have a genuine willingness to help, show drive and initiative, and bring a positive 'can-do' attitude. If this sounds like you, we want you on the team!

Additionally, volunteers applying to join this program will be required to supply to following documentation:

  • Emergency contact
  • Passport
  • Police check
  • Resume

Volunteers may also stay on-site at an orphanage if preferred and available.

Volunteers are provided with breakfast and dinner daily at the volunteer house throughout their placement and lunch can be purchased from the many local eateries near to the placement (the local team will show you their favourites during the orientation) and is both cheap and delicious.

Indian food is not restricted to the ubiquitous ‘take-aways’ Westerners might be used to and there will be something for every palate from delectable street food to rice based dishes and curries, naans and kebabs and so much more. Dishes are often vegetarian with lentils (known locally as dal) a common ingredient.

Delhi is an extremely cosmopolitan city and international cuisine is readily available as well.
