The Construction Program
This essential construction program was created to help impoverished families into safe and sanitary homes. Housing is a fundamental human right under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and everyone should have a safe, secure, and habitable home. Unfortunately, in Costa Rica, many people are impoverished and do not have adequate housing. Volunteers on this program work with project staff and locals on every aspect of the building process, helping wherever it is needed. Volunteers play a huge labor role, ensuring that there is enough people power to ensure the building work can be completed. Without unpaid volunteers in Costa Rica, providing these homes to marginalised families would be out of reach.
Goals of this Project:
- Provide low-cost, quality housing to impoverished families
- Provide safe, healthy homes to enable families to live happier, healthier lives
- Improve the prospects of some of Costa Rica’s most impoverished people, and help them to break the poverty cycle
- Expose volunteers and locals to new cultures
How You Can Help
This construction program is vital to the lives of many Costa Rican families. Supplying a warm, dry and healthy home gives impoverished families a chance to grow and thrive. Volunteers play an essential role in the ongoing viability of this program, supplying a willing workforce to help the benefiting family into a real home. Participants may be involved in every aspect of the building process on this amazing program, from the design phase to final construction and furniture making. Volunteers will gain wonderful experience with the construction process and with working in a foreign environment. This program will undoubtedly be hard work. Volunteers must be fit and able to work manually, and more importantly – be enthusiastic with a ‘can do’ attitude. The weather may be hot, and volunteers will need to be able to work in the sun. This program plays a major role in providing communities with safe housing, while also providing an amazing cross-cultural experience for everyone involved.
Volunteers will contribute in many ways and can expect to undertake the following tasks:
- Help design work plans
- Help build the foundations for houses
- Move earth to flatten out ground
- Build houses
- Move construction materials
- Help build furniture and fixtures for houses
Love Volunteers welcomes all those 18 years and over who wish to have a tangible and lasting impact on the lives of families and communities facing extreme poverty in Costa Rica. This 'hands-on' project is ideally suited to those volunteers with some knowledge and experience in construction or any of the building trades, however the project is open to all and does not require participants to have specific education, qualifications or experience, as you will be shown everything you need to know by your local project leader. Importantly though, all applicants must first and foremost have a genuine willingness to help, be fit and active, show drive and initiative, and bring a positive 'can-do' attitude. If this sounds like you, we want you on the team!
Additionally, volunteers applying to join this program will be required to supply to following documentation:
- Emergency contact
- Police check
This project is available in San Ramon de Alajuela and the surrounding villages. Given the nature of these projects, in most cases projects are fairly remote and therefore volunteers will spend the majority of their time (including free time) onsite as opportunities to travel offsite may be limited. Where possible though, volunteers can sometimes use free time to travel to a nearby town to explore shops and restaurants, or to explore further afield. Offsite travel options will be discussed with volunteers during their project orientation. This project is a wonderful option for those volunteers who wish to be fully immersed in the astounding nature and beauty that Costa Rica has to offer!
Start Dates & Duration
This project is available year-round and programs typically start every 1st and 3rd SUNDAY of each month. Volunteers can choose to participate for periods ranging from 2 weeks to 12 weeks. Longer stays can be arranged directly with the local team, but will be subject to availability and individual visa conditions.
Spaces on this project are limited and therefore subject to availability. Early booking is recommended.
For current available start dates please check the calendar on the right.
Arrival & Orientation
Upon your arrival in San Jose you will be collected at the airport and transported to your designated project location. Once settled in you will receive a full welcome orientation where you will find out about your volunteering placement, the local surroundings and meet your fellow volunteers. A representative from the local team will fill you in on local and regional customs, traveling, rules and recommendations, and of course, what to expect from your volunteering experience. This is a great opportunity to get to know your hosts, meet your fellow volunteers, and ask any last questions you may have. You will then be taken to your assigned project location, where you will be introduced to your project supervisor and the rest of the local project team. Easy!
