Conservation on the Galapagos Islands

Location: Galapagos Islands

The main goal of this program is to develop methods for restoring native species in the highlands of the San Cristóbal Island and on other islands in the future. The program assists a local Conservation Centre and aims to engage the local community with its conservation effort. The native forests in Galápagos are shrinking due to farming activities and the introduction of such useful but invasive plant species as cinchona, cedar and blackberry.

The volunteer program focuses its activities on re-forestation, habitat restoration, organic agriculture, environmental education in local schools, centre maintenance and development. The residential staff organise the activities and give support to the volunteers. A minimum commitment of two weeks is required for this program and the maximum stay is two months.

Those interested in planning and developing projects should commit themselves to a three month stay. The work is out doors and physically demanding. The working week is Monday to Friday, 8 hours per day. The program includes accommodation in shared cabins and 3 meals per day.

NOTE: In addition to the listed program fee, volunteers are required to cover the following costs

  • Flight ticket Quito- Galapagos –Quito (approx.) $550
  • Accommodation in Quito prior to leaving for Galapagos (4 days recommended) $11-20 per night
  • Galapagos National park fee $100
  • Galapagos Migration card $10
  • Transportation on the Islands depending on the Island and project.

Knowledge of the Spanish language will be advantageous, but is not a prerequisite for this program. Spanish lessons can be arranged during your placement in Ecuador, and are highly recommended.

Teaching English on the Galapagos Islands

Location: Galapagos Islands

The Galápagos Islands are an archipelago of volcanic islands distributed on either side of the Equator in the Pacific Ocean. Located at the confluence of three ocean currents, the Galápagos are a 'melting pot' of marine species. Much like the revolutionary scientific idea it's become synonymous with, the Galápagos Islands may inspire you to think differently about the world!

Tourists visiting the Galapagos Islands are often shocked that in a place where people depend on tourism for 90% of their income, they do not receive a reasonable level of education, especially in the English Language. Often, even the teachers have problems since the Galapagos Islands have strict laws regarding hiring people from abroad, or even from Ecuador. Volunteers are therefore the best option to help to improve and develop these skills of the local population on the Islands.

Volunteer on this program will assist the local English teacher according to their schedule, and may work with children and/or teenagers. It’s important that volunteers are flexible as there are a number of other tasks they can help with. These might include helping children with their homework, arranging games and activities, cleaning the classroom and assisting teachers with day to day administrative duties.

Join us on this amazing program and get the chance to not only provide life-changing skills to the local inhabitants, but to explore the amazing and fascinating Islands of the Galapagos! Volunteers can choose to work in either San Cristobal, Santa Cruz or Isabela Islands.

NOTE: In addition to the listed program fee, volunteers are required to cover the following costs

  • Flight ticket Quito- Galapagos –Quito (approx.) $550
  • Galapagos National park fee $100
  • Galapagos Migration card $10
  • Transportation on the Islands depending on the Island and project.

Childcare on the Galapagos Islands

Location: Galapagos Islands

Much like the revolutionary scientific idea it's become synonymous with, the Galápagos Islands may inspire you to think differently about the world!

Although many people view The Galapagos Islands as a very expensive and very touristic area of Ecuador, with many huge cruise companies operating in the area, it is they who get rich while the local population toil in the same economic situation. The day-care centres which we work with are public and provide valuable help to the local families so that they can work and provide a better life for their children. This program provides volunteers with the opportunity to share their knowledge and skills with those in need, and to help shape the lives of the beautiful children of Ecuador.

Whilst participating in this program, volunteers’ tasks will include playing with the children, feeding those in need, assisting with the acquisition of social skills and language development, as well as helping children to do their homework. There is also sufficient scope for volunteers to share any personal skills they have in music, dance or art, and this is very much encouraged.

This amazing program takes place in two of the four populated Islands of the Galapagos Archipelago, so volunteers are free to choose which Island they would like to work - San Cristobal or Santa Cruz Island. Join us and get the chance to not only provide life-changing skills to the local inhabitants, but to explore the amazing and fascinating Islands of the Galapagos!
